I always have a lot of inquiries about capturing birth stories. Below I have kind of answered a few questions that I tend to run across quite often that will help you get a better understanding of how it exactly works and how I will approach your birth story.
People frequently ask when is it best to book a birth story? Being that I shoot one birth story a month, it is recommended to book and secure your spot on my schedule as soon as you know you would like for me to be there. I only accept one a month to ensure I have enough time for this session and I don’t run into two birth stories at the same time.
What is the benefit to hiring a birth photographer? Birth is a very raw, emotional, amazing time! Having me present allows for your partner, family, & friends to be more helpful to you and also fully present in the experience itself. You as the mother often times cannot see all that is happening because you are so focused on the task at hand!! I’m able to carefully document each step of the way!
What all does a birth story package include? As we know, babies come when they are ready. You will have my on-call availability in the weeks before and after your due date. Like I said before, I schedule no more than one birth story a month to ensure I am able to be there. I am with you for as long as it takes. You will receive a private online gallery for sharing, 40 digital images (option to purchase more) and a print release.
When do I come and how long do I stay after the baby arrives? I prefer to come just as soon as you know you are really in labor. This gives me time to document many of the little, important details that you will want to remember later… as well as be a part of the delicate birth environment before labor intensifies. If this is a cesarean birth, I will be there at the scheduled time we have discussed prior to this day.
Please give me as much advance notice as possible when you think you might be in labor. I know this is not always possible, but it is greatly appreciated when it is. It will help ensure we get the best photos possible.
What if I don’t want “everything” photographed? I have clients with all different comfort levels regarding their birth images. Some want to see everything in their photos, others would prefer I stay by their heads and take the photos from that perspective. I will honor your wishes. However, I do think that most clients are happier in the end with the “see it all” approach. Birth is a miracle, and trust me you will want to relive and remember every detail years down the road. After all, these photos are for your eyes only… and you only have to share the ones you want to.
Many ask if I photograph Cesarean births? Yes, yes I do! This is a significant different price than a natural birth story for many different reason. Solely, because it is a scheduled surgery with a specific date and time. Though I am still on call weeks before your scheduled surgery incase of any changes, remember babies come when they are ready! With this type of procedure, some hospitals + doctors are concerned with having a photographer in the room and I have to abide by the physician’s policies. It is important that you discuss all the possible scenarios with your care providers and hospital you’ll be delivering at.
Are there any times that you are NOT on call? Yes, I am human too and I have a family at home as well. As much as I LOVE my job, I also love family time and I always make sure I have time off to do so. I will not be on call on the following dates: February 14th-16th, March 27th, June 1st-11th, July 3-4th, September 1st-9th, October 6th, December 3rd, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve or New Years Day! Thank you for understanding!
What happens if you miss the birth? If I am given a reasonable amount of notice and called at the very beginning of labor, I will not miss it. But, quick labors DO happen and at that point you can choose what you’d like for me to do. There’s a couple different options you can choose from, I can photograph the postpartum time after the baby is born like I would normally and the full amount will still be owed, you can tell me not to come at all and there will be no balance due and the deposit is refunded. We can also credit your deposit towards a fresh 48 session, this is where I come in after the baby is born but before you leave the hospital. See my fresh 48 page for more information on this! Again, if you call me at the beginning of labor then this will rarely be an issue.
You are also a portrait photographer as well, what if this all happens when you have another session scheduled? As soon as I know your due date, I will be in touch with all my clients around that time frame to inform them that I am on call for your birth story. My clients know that this is part of my job and understand that they may have to reschedule if this day falls on their session time and date. However, if this falls on the date and time of a wedding I am photographing we will have to play it by ear and the same as if I “missed” the birth story will apply.
I hope this really helps! If you have anymore questions regarding your birth story or want to know if your date is available for a session like such, message me and let’s chat!
